I loved it. WE never had TV, so were always looking for new fun back in the day. And found I love it again mostly because I can teach this newer generation about fun games not attached to electronics.
Of course. It was a playground necessity and for keeps as well. I had a big bag of “winnings” which my Mum gave to disadvantaged family she knew when I had out grown marbles. I still have a few of my favourites here somewhere 🙂
Great. It is funny. As soon as the kids left I immediately went looking for “good” marbles. We were using the marbles from the KerPlunk game since it was random that I thought about it. I found it interesting that I wanted cool colors and the best shooters. lol. Thanks for sharing the link.
I collected marbles but I don’t recall actually playing marbles. We didn’t have a TV until I was in high school so we played lots of outdoor games including croquet which would be hard to play here with rocks and caliche. 🙂 🙂 We rode bikes, played ball in the streets (side streets and obviously when no cars were coming, played army, floated boats in the gutters when it rained, etc. We also played indoor games although my dad and I almost always won so my brother didn’t really want to play after a bit.
Your title reminds me of softball, which I played competitively for many years. When the company my husband worked for had a picnic, I was asked to play. But when I shot the ball over to first from third/short, I was asked why I threw it so hard. Sigh. That was the end of “playing for fun” for me because fun meant playing hard although not worrying about winning. 🙂
Hahaha. Knowing you in real life makes me appreciate your comment even more. Once a competitor…. I told my grandson I used to rule the playground with marbles. I think that motivated him more. He enjoys competing too.
Funny you talked about floating boats. With all the rain today, the neighbor kids are outside finding anything they can to float down the streets. Simple things for the win… always.
We never played marbles! We played Hopscotch, though.

Hi Judy. Funny. I thought everyone played marbles at some point. My husband also never played.
I had to look the rules back up, but my grandson is now hooked.

of course. And didn’t realize how much exercise it gave us. Shoot, and go to the other side, shoot again and repeat.

That’s a great story of your mom. And it is amazing how we cherish the silliest of things. Of course they are not silly to our hearts, are they?

I hope you find some good marbles Donna. Check second hand shops. Sometimes there are some there 🙂

Lots of thunder, lightning, and rain here today too , coming in waves. We floated no boats, though. 😉
