Color will always have a place in our hearts. Imagining a world without it seems impossible. But on the other end of the spectrum lies a side of photography that can change the perception of needing color: Black And White or Monochrome.
Without color to cue us, black and white images call our attention to detail and lines. Without color, we are inspired to contemplate an image without distractions. And without color, light stands out, contrast becomes apparent and so we see images differently.
Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive. – Elliott Erwitt

And what of people? The statues below are on opposite street corners in Montreal’s center square. On the left a well-dressed Englishman looks in one direction while his English bulldog looks towards the exquisitely dressed French woman on the right with the French poodle. There is a long history of changes on the streets of Montreal. The masks to hide their feelings. And yet the statures are meant to symbolize, can’t we all just get along...like the dogs.
When you photograph people in color you photograph their clothes. When you photograph people in black and white you photograph their soul. – Ted Grant

And will you agree there is a timelessness with black and white photography? Nostalgia is what comes to mind for me or maybe it is the poetic quality. There is certainly more mystery, meditative quality, and quiet elegance. to form more visual power and connection between the subject and the viewer.
In a world of trends, be timeless.
