They call it a PCS (Permanent Change of Station).
Permanent? Ha. I always knew better. Instead, it meant we took all our stuff with us on a move, as opposed to a TDY (Temporary Duty) when my dad (or later my husband) was deployed.
Now with this small lesson in military jargon out of the way, I will move along. By the time I entered college, I had moved fourteen times. It was our life, and it was the norm.

Then I married a military man. He was in a specialized field, and while moves were less frequent, deployments were highly classified and often in places I wasn’t allowed to know. Necessary moves were sudden and at times, we met him at the other end of his journey.

I never really thought of it as an inconvenience. It was just the way it was. I don’t even think I realized it was different until I had met people who had actually lived their whole life in one home.

A change of address meant something else too. It meant making new friends, and sometimes learning a new language. It meant trying new things, and assimilation of the newest culture in our path. We learned very quickly, a place is what you make it.

And when it was our turn to settle down, and never move again, we didn’t have it in us. In 2010, my husband and I excepted jobs in Yellowstone National Park. Once again we looked at change, but for the first time, I felt outside my comfort zone.
Did my husband not know there were wild animals?
Did he not know we had a lot to learn? Or…
Did he know we would be forever changed?

I miss those days. All of them.
The camaraderie of a people living a gypsy life, the vast knowledge we gathered from our stops along the way, and experiencing nature in it’s most spectacular showing, defines us. We are resilient, and are pretty dang good at loving what life throws at us.
For now, we have settled in Arizona, but look for us rumbling down the road. One thing we won’t change, is turning the page to the chapter we haven’t started yet.

Home is where you hang your heart.

Be willing to be a beginner every single day.

I may make a vision-board with that quote. Made my day (a fellow wanderer, temporarily stuck in one place/space).

Wonderful post! You were and are a traveler, for sure. After a few infrequent moves, I started a career in Fargo, North Dakota, and didn’t leave until I retired, living in the same house for some 35 years, give or take. Only recently did we get a wanderlust to travel, but we still call North Dakota home.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on change!

Thank you, John. I love your travels as well, for me it just happened to be my life. Donna. I liked the challenge.

I moved many times during my younger life, but for different reasons. When I settled in my current house, who knew I’d be here for 25 years and counting. No regrets though. We’ve had many travels. When my husband retired 3 years ago, I started a travel journal. The crazy thing is, before I even started the “retirement” travel adventures, I realized we’d already taken 15 amazing trips! We’ve added 6 more, with more to come! Your international adventures do sound exciting though… So I guess that’s why I love to look at travel posts!! I hope for more, and I’m grateful for all the memories so far 🙏

Yes. Always another page to turn. The greatest thing about AZ though, is we can have amazing adventures and make it home that evening. AZ is a great place to settle. With all our travels, there were certain checkmarks that were necessary for us to land. This had all of them. Heading over to your blog. Donna

I am getting the reason behind your name. Wind Kisses. You move with the wind, you are kind and you leave behind lots of kisses where ever you are. I enjoyed this post and getting to know you just a little better. 🙂

thank you Marsh. I little bit. I DO indeed love to move through life gracefully. And nature provides the best backdrop to that. The name wind kisses is two fold. It does describe my life and it was also a name generated when my young grandson moved away. They have since returned. If you ever have time, on my tabs there is a “Why Windkisses” Thank you for being such a great supporter. Donna

Beautifully written, Donna. I fully subscribe to the idea of embracing whatever life throws at you and of new chapters. It sounds like you made the best of your adventures in the US and abroad. Though, at this point in my life, I feel a concurrent wish to settle somewhere, to make a base from which to explore and travel. I have had a nomadic life as well. Beginning with my childhood and a father who worked for the military, so lots of moves. In my adult life, I’ve never been able to settle anywhere for longer than several years at a time. There’s a certain romance to the way impermanence defines our lives.

Yes. I love it when I come across others like you. You get it. Your last sentence will be one I repeat, I am sure.
We have lived in our Arizona home for 10 years now, and it is funny because at about he 4 year mark I got itchy. Feeling like… what is next. Travel and exploring do wonders for that and we can feel grounded here too. Thanks again, I have so much admiration for your adventures and blog info. donna

What got me was moving 14 times before college then you married a military man. But as you said, that’s what you knew and you expected everyone to live that way. Loved your Spain picture … and cheers to embracing Arizona. Where’s the next stop? 😉

ya…such is life. Its funny. We have lived and traveled the country. For three years we lived in an RV and just went where ever the road, or reading ahead took us. We sold that, and spent a few years with grandchildren nearby and appreciating what Arizona/Utah/ CA have to offer. WE are kind of going backwards. we have purchased an of road trailer so we can go anywhere the beaten path can take us. WE have only had it for a month, but that will be our “next” Thanks Frank. Ahhh. It made you strong, this life. Keep turning new pages. The wildlife photos are so precious, so in-intrusive. (But that submarine looks so spooky.)

The wildlife in Yellowstone was so fun. I loved watching for babies each spring. The submarine life was different then most people, but it was what we knew. I was always glad I had 2 daughters. We were very close.

WE were actually allowed to visit, when they were in port and not under alert. they had an ice cream on board. The girls thought it was heaven.

and 3. I love, love, love your Very Own Quote… Home is Where you Hang You Heart At. WOW!
I am off to read your tab about Wind Kisses but I enjoyed Marsha’s comment above!

Another beautiful post Donna. Unlike you my wanderlust is related only to travel. Have had few moves, most recently from north to south but I need to feel connected to my environment pretty tightly. But out travels typically last longer than most, so does that count ?!😊. Loved this one and as Marsha says, getting to know you better

What a wonderful post, Donna. Lovely images. Your spirit of adventure and your willingness to adjust to change are fabulous. How many languages do you know? I admire your willingness to keep changing/evolving. Like you, we’ve moved many times and aren’t ready to plant our feet in one place just yet.😀

Thank you Patti. I can butcher two other languages pretty well. Lol. When we lived in Germany, and then Spain it became a way of life and much easier to use. When we go back , it comes back but charades works well too. And I am not afraid to try.
Thank you for you nice comment. I do think change is what keeps life fun. Donna Thanks again.
